People worldwide can securely connect to
computer systems within the Emory Healthcare (EHC) network provided they have a
business need to do so. The Information Services department (IS) of EHC administers this remote access. IS only provides the means by which
to securely access information within the EHC network from the
Internet or Emory University networks or any other network connected to the Internet. IS
does not provide the means by which to connect to the Internet.
A person connects to the Internet using
their own Internet Service Provider (ISP), such as Charter Communications,
Comcast, or Earthlink.
He then executes any software needed to access data within EHC,
such as HealthQuest. HealthQuest looks for the computer (or host) containing the
data needed. Software on the person's computer called SecuRemote
intercepts the transmission and requests that the person identify himself by
using a logon ID and password. After authenticating the person, the transmission
of the data is encrypted and thus protected from all other individuals on the
Internet.

Logon ID |
You must first obtain a logon ID for SecuRemote. This logon ID only allows you to connect to EHC. Logon IDs can be requested from Access Coordinators* (AC) within each department of EHC. ACs are individuals assigned by the Department Director to be a liaison between Security Services and their department. If you do not know who your AC is, you may search for your AC using the link above, contact your Department Director or call (404) 778-HELP. * Link only available inside the EHC network. |
|
Access to Data |
In addition to the logon ID and password needed to connect to EHC, you will need access to the data or applications you need. Your AC can help you with this as well. |
|
Internet Access |
You will need to obtain your own ISP or other means to access the Internet. In the Atlanta area, we have found that SecuRemote will not function properly with only two providers, America Online and BellSouth DSL. We have not experienced problems with any other providers. Please see the Troubleshooting link for more information. You can find an ISP serving your area by clicking here or here. Other means include using a workstation located at the Emory University or other network external to EHC. |
|
Software |
You must have a Microsoft Windows operating system to run the software needed to make the connection. The software is called SecuRemote and can be downloaded at Step 5 from http://support.emory.org/securemote.htm. You will be asked for your logon ID and password when you access Step 3 on this website. As stated earlier, this can be obtained from your AC. |
|
Accessible |
You can access any system that uses the Internet Protocol (IP) to communicate. These systems include but are not limited to PowerChart (CDR), IDX, GroupWise, and HealthQuest. |
|
Inaccessible |
Many applications were written for a LAN environment. We are unable to support such applications because they simply will not work if you are located too far away from them. This includes but is not limited to network drives such as "G:" and "H:". |
The Call Center at (404) 778-HELP provides
telephone support for enterprise applications and EHC owned personal computers.
They cannot provide on-site support for your remote workstation. They also cannot
provide support for your connection to the Internet. This is supported by your
ISP.
